AdBlue®: Setting the Record Straight

In our work with DEUTZ customers across the UK, we hear many of the same questions and concerns about AdBlue® – from whether it’s safe for your engine to whether it actually improves emissions performance. The truth is, there’s still a lot of confusion (and misinformation) out there.

As part of our DEUTZ Expert Series, I’m here to clear up the most common myths and explain the facts behind how AdBlue® works, how to use it properly, and why using the right quality product, like DEUTZ PowerBlue, really matters.

Myth 1: AdBlue® Damages Engine Performance

Contrary to this misconception, AdBlue® is not harmful to diesel engines. AdBlue® is an essential component of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and is used for breaking down harmful emissions (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. Controlled injection of AdBlue® into the exhaust stream will enhance the emission performance of your DEUTZ engine. DEUTZ PowerBlue is an optimised alternative to standard AdBlue®.

Myth 2: AdBlue® is a Low-Quality Additive

AdBlue® is a high quality additive which meets ISO 22241 industry standards, ensuring its purity and effectiveness in reducing NOx emissions from your DEUTZ engine. DEUTZ PowerBlue improves spraying behaviour into the exhaust gas stream and is crucial to maintain optimal performance and compliance with emission regulations.

Myth 3: DEF & AdBlue® are Interchangeable

AdBlue® is a branded version of DEF certified by the VDA, meeting the stringent ISO 22241 standard. Most DEF brands will have similar compositions and functions but they are not interchangeable due to variations in concentration and impurities. DEUTZ PowerBlue is an optimised alternative to standard AdBlue®. Not all DEF brands necessarily meet this standard which is why we only recommend the use of genuine DEUTZ fluids for your DEUTZ equipment.

Myth 4: More AdBlue® = Better Emissions Performance

Using more AdBlue® (DEF) does not enhance performance or improve emissions reduction. SCR systems are precisely calibrated for optimal operation which is why you should only use the recommended dosage. Overdosing can lead to unnecessary expense and potential issues within the SCR system.

Myth 5: AdBlue® Freezes in Cold Weather

AdBlue’s® urea-water solution resists freezing in typical winter conditions because the urea concentration prevents the fluid from solidifying. This ensures smooth operation for your DEUTZ engine with increased engine up-time and reduced unplanned stand-still-time, maintenance and operating costs. DEUTZ PowerBlue is an optimised alternative to the standard AdBlue® / AUS / DEF urea solution and is particularly suitable for low ambient temperatures.

Myth 6: AdBlue® Evaporates Quickly

AdBlue® is a stable solution with a lower evaporation rate than water, benefiting your DEUTZ engine’s emission performance. To ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the fluid we recommend proper storage and handling. Store AdBlue® in a cool, dry place, using sealed containers, away from direct sunlight and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures. Avoid storing it for extended periods; always check the expiration date before use.

Myth 7: AdBlue® is Harmful to Humans and Animals

AdBlue® is a non-toxic solution safe for handling in your DEUTZ equipment. It is composed of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionised water. However, proper storage and handling guidelines should always be followed. We recommend gloves are worn to prevent any accidental skin irritation.

Myth 8: AdBlue® Quality Doesn’t Matter

Using poor-quality or contaminated AdBlue® can harm your DEUTZ engine’s Exhaust Aftertreatment by causing SCR system malfunctions and increased emissions. Contaminated AdBlue® / DEF may appear cloudy or discoloured. To ensure the health of your DEUTZ engine and to comply with emissions regulations we only recommend genuine DEUTZ PowerBlue is used.
